January 2017 Expansion of the 2016 HP Notebook Computer Notebook Battery Safety Recall and Replacement Program – Additional Batteries Affected

In January 2017, HP announced an expansion of its ongoing worldwide voluntary safety recall and replacement program, for certain notebook computer batteries, which was announced in June 2016. The program has been expanded to include additional batteries that were shipped with the same notebook products.

The affected batteries were shipped with specific HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion Notebook Computers sold worldwide from March 2013 through October 2016, and/or were sold as accessories or spares, or provided as replacements through Support. These batteries have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers. HP urges customers to recheck their batteries, even if they did so previously, and were told they were not affected. However, original batteries replaced as part of the program announced in June 2016 are not affected by this program expansion. Customers should cease use of affected batteries immediately. HP customers affected by this program will be eligible to receive a replacement battery for each verified, affected battery at no cost.

New Intel CPUs to power desktops, laptops, hybrids and more

At CES 2017, Intel has announced a major (but largely expected) expansion of its current CPU lineup, with the addition of several new and more powerful seventh-generation Core i-series processors.

We've already seen and tested a handful of laptops with processors from Intel's seventh-generation of Core i-series chips, sometimes known by the code name Kaby Lake. But, those late-2016 systems, such as the Acer Swift 7, used low-power Y-series processors, which are intended for slim, lightweight laptops that need passable performance and excellent battery life -- these were not the mainstream CPUs most laptops and desktops rely on. (In fact, under the sixth-generation, also known as Skylake, Y-series chips were previously branded as Core M, a less powerful line than the traditional Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs.)

Now, Intel is ready to make seventh-generation processors available across a wider range of PCs. These new parts are more powerful quad-core CPUs, aimed at performance users interested in gaming, overclocking, or enterprise-level vPro systems (a set of Intel features for corporate IT security).

Highlights of the newly announced expanded seventh-gen lineup include (as per Intel):

•4.5W Intel Core vPro processors (Y-series) for 2 in 1 detachables

These new Kaby Lake CPUs are not radically different from the sixth-gen Skylake ones they replace, as both are built on the same 14-nanometer process, highlighting the difficulty in really moving the needle on PC components these days. Intel says the new chips will offer smoother 4K video playback (and improved battery life while doing so), better graphics in both games and VR, even without a discrete graphics chip from a company like Nvidia or AMD, and support for fast Thunderbolt 3 data transfer. There are also security improvements to the vPro platform, which is a series of hardware and software tools, mostly of interest to IT managers. Those include new features for multifactor authentication, facial recognition login, and password managers.

You can expect to see several new laptop and desktop models announced this week at CES that will use the new Intel seventh-generation CPUs.

Microsoft shows off the power of the Surface Dial in new videos

Microsoft’s Surface Studio may not yet be available, but the firm is releasing a glut of videos on YouTube to whet the appetites of Surface lovers while they wait.

While previously Microsoft had briefly demoed apps like Sketchable and Drawboard PDF on the Studio, new videos have been uploaded to show just how well the Surface Studio works with various apps built for Windows 10. In particular focus is the Surface Dial, with the Surface Studio, Microsoft innovated a new mode of interaction – the puck like Surface Dial. The Surface Dial is a tool that can be placed on the screen of the Surface Studio in various apps to display UI options that would have been hitherto hidden, this is built off of the radial menus interface that Microsoft once played with while developing OneNote for Windows 8 and 8.1. While the Studio is an amazing device, one can argue that the Surface Dial is the real star of the show.After all, AIOs are a dime a dozen, but the Surface Dial is the first of its kind.

Microsoft’s Surface Studio and Dial will be available early 2017 and we’ll be able to see just how practical this new mode of interaction really is. Till then, you can salivate over the following internet videos.

Microsoft to fix Windows flaw exploited by hackers

Microsoft said on Tuesday that it will issue a fix next week for a Windows vulnerability it says is being exploited by hackers linked to Russia's government.

The company said in a blog post that it would release the fix November 8 as part of its normal patch cycle, adding that a well-known hacking group was already using the newly discovered flaw in a hacking campaign that sends people bogus emails in an attempt to con them out of personal data. The bug, which was publicly revealed by Google on Monday, can be used to bypass the security in the Windows32K system.

The revelation of the bug has caused some friction between Microsoft and Google. The search giant said it gave Microsoft 10 days to issue an advisory or a fix but that Microsoft failed to act. Google went public after that because it rated the bug as "critical" and learned it was being actively exploited. Microsoft hasn't addressed the delay in issuing a fix but disputed Google's assessment of the bug's threat, adding that Google's disclosure "could put customers at potential risk."

Microsoft said a hacking group known as Strontium was behind email attacks that took advantage of the flaw. The group, more widely known as "Fancy Bear" and APT 28, has also been linked to a series of hacks this summer, including one in which emails and chat transcripts were stolen from the Democratic National Committee's computer network.

The holiday season is only a few weeks away, and Microsoft is getting ready for 2017. There probably won’t be much news and updates coming out of Redmond until 2017, so the software giant is releasing updates to some of its apps to ensure customers are getting the best experience. Today, the company released a pretty major update to the Outlook app for iPhones, adding some interesting features.

iPhone owners can now create and edit recurring events on Outlook, which means it will be much easier to keep track events which you need to attend frequently. For example, if there’s an event which you need to attend every month, you can simply set-up a recurring event for it and Outlook will remind you about it every month.

Along with recurring events, Outlook on the iPhone is also getting support for Apple’s Passbook files which is definitely a much-needed addition if you use Passbook for your digital passes. With this feature, all the Passbook files which you receive via email on Outlook can now be viewed very easily.

Microsoft has also improved the Search feature to show results by conversation rather than separate emails.
